History of Vertical Cinema

Visual art prior to cinema didn’t adhere to a single orientation or aspect ratio, favoring vertical framing in Asian and pre-Renaissance European art while paintings varied in shape and size. Cinema’s early battles over screen geometry birthed diverse historical formats, with Sergei Eisenstein advocating for adaptable geometries, losing to commercial pressures that established Academy Ratio. VVIFF is more than a festival, it is a conversation about the nature of filmmaking which, by very definition, is subject to evolution and new frontiers of creative potential.
